I am both a
Fine Artist and a Commercial Artist with a lifetime of experience.
Creating things has always been a big part of my life. I started as a young child by sketching. As I got older, I was introduced to paints, clay and other mediums. When I left high school, I became interested in Industrial design, drafting and graphic design. I went to art school and studied both Fine and Commercial Art. After leaving school I went into Commercial Art and Photography, doing my Painted on the side. I worked at ad agencies and freelanced when there was time. Later I went on my own to do illustrating, photography and graphic designing. During the seventies, I illustrated a Woodcarving Book for Michael DeNike. I became so fascinated by this art form of removing material to get to your finished work. Prior to this, every medium I had worked was the process of adding something, whether it be paint, charcoal, clay, etc. So I decided to study Wood Carving and Stone Sculpture with Michael. Later that same year and into the following year, I studied Illustrative and Sign Carving from Jarvis Boone who had a carving studio in Sugar Loaf, New York. In 1977 I uprooted myself from the East Coast and traveled to the far corner of the Northwest, settling into Bellingham, Washington. There I opened my first woodcarving studio on Dupont Street. In the eighties, I was introduced to the computer as an artistic medium. First, it started out like having an electronic paint brush. However as time has moved on, it has become a much more versatile artistic tool. I find it very exciting and quite stimulating. Now that we are in the nineties, I call upon all these wonderful mediums. I feel very lucky to have all these assorted tools of creation at my disposal. Carving wood keeps me grounded to the earth. There is such a feeling wood has which none of the other mediums have. Although I don't carve very much stone, it is a medium which is very grounding and one I also enjoy working with. I still sketch and enjoy painting with both oils and acrylics. When you paint with the computer, you don't get your hands messed up, but it lacks that wonderful smell only can only get from oils. |
